A college degree isn’t a prerequisite for a successful career in business. I should know. I don’t have one. We expect CEOs to have multiple diplomas from the right kind of schools. But these preconceived notions aren’t an indicator of success. In fact, research conducted by the CEO Genome Project looked at a dataset of more than 17,000 CEOs and found that 8 percent didn’t graduate from college. People like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg come to mind. Like them, I am part of that 8 percent.
A college degree would have held me back. Days after finishing high school, I was working full time in a job that would eventually lead to my becoming a CEO. I remember my interview very clearly. One of the owners laid out my professional path, explaining that investing years into my work experience rather than college, would have me in a more advanced position before my peers graduated with their degree. He was not wrong.
